Boron and Testosterone – Does It Work?

Boron can increase the proportion of free testosterone by lowering levels of SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin), the protein that binds testosterone and renders it biologically inactive. In one frequently cited study, free testosterone increased by around 28% and SHBG decreased by around 22% in men who took 10 mg of boron daily for one week. The effect applies mainly to free testosterone – total testosterone is affected less.

What is boron?

Boron is a trace element found naturally in fruit, vegetables and nuts, but in amounts that rarely match the doses used in studies. The body needs only very small amounts, but at supplement doses it has been shown to affect hormone balance, bone health and inflammation.

What does the research say?

The evidence for boron and testosterone is based on a limited number of smaller studies, but the results consistently point in the same direction:

  • Studies at doses of 6–10 mg/day have shown lowered SHBG within 1–2 weeks.
  • The effect on free testosterone is more consistently documented than the effect on total testosterone.
  • Long-term data (over several months) is still largely lacking, so the effect of continuous long-term use is less studied than the short-term effect.

Dosage

Most studies showing an effect have used 6–10 mg of boron per day. Boron Albion from Swanson contains 6 mg per capsule, which is within the studied range. High doses (above 20 mg/day over longer periods) have not been studied for safety and are not recommended without consulting a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How quickly do you notice an effect from boron?

SHBG changes have appeared in studies after just one week, but an evaluation period of 4–6 weeks gives a fairer picture of the actual perceived effect.

Can boron be taken together with other testoboosters?

Yes, boron is often combined with herbal alternatives such as Tongkat Ali because the mechanisms differ (lowering SHBG versus direct hormonal support). See the full range in the Testoboosters collection.

Is boron safe for daily use?

At the doses studied (6–10 mg/day), boron has not shown serious side effects in studies, but data on use for longer than a few months at a time is limited.

Does boron raise testosterone in everyone?

The effect varies. Men who already have low SHBG have less room for improvement compared with men who have higher SHBG levels to start with.

Is boron the same thing as a regular testobooster extract?

No. Boron is a mineral/trace element, while Tongkat Ali, for example, is a plant extract. They affect testosterone balance through different mechanisms, which is why they are often combined.

Summary

Boron has one of the clearer, if limited, research backings in the testobooster category specifically for raising free testosterone by lowering SHBG. It is a good complement to lifestyle measures and herbal supplements – read more in the full guide on increasing testosterone naturally.
