Lion's Mane – The Mushroom for Focus? How It Works

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus, in Swedish igelkottstaggsvamp) is an edible functional mushroom that contains the active compounds hericenones and erinacines as well as beta-glucans. The mushroom has become popular in nootropics circles, and research has taken an interest in its compounds linked to nerve cells – but Lion's Mane has no EU-approved health claims, so below we describe the mushroom, its compounds, quality differences and the research interest, not promised effects on focus or memory.

What is Lion's Mane?

Lion's Mane is a white, shaggy mushroom that grows on broadleaf trees and looks like a cascade of soft spines – hence both the English name (a lion's mane) and the Swedish (igelkottstaggsvamp, "hedgehog spine mushroom"). It has been used both as an edible mushroom and in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. In Sweden it is uncommon in the wild and protected in several areas, so the mushroom sold as a supplement is cultivated. Today it is sold above all as a dried extract in capsule or powder form.

The mushroom is counted among the functional mushrooms together with reishi and cordyceps among others – a group of mushrooms that are cultivated and used for more than their nutritional value in traditional use.

Which compounds does it contain?

Lion's Mane contains several groups of bioactive compounds that are often highlighted:

  • Hericenones – found in the fruiting body itself (the mushroom). Fat-soluble compounds.
  • Erinacines – found mainly in the mycelium (the mushroom's root threads). Fat-soluble compounds.
  • Beta-glucans – a type of polysaccharide (dietary fibre) in the mushroom's cell walls. Water-soluble and often used as a quality marker for mushroom extracts.

It is these compounds that research has taken an interest in, including in laboratory and animal studies linked to nerve cells. Important: such studies are early and do not mean that an effect on human focus or memory is proven or approved. If you want a standardised extract, look for a stated level of beta-glucans or the active compounds.

Fruiting body vs mycelium – what is the difference?

This is the most important difference to understand when you compare products, since it affects both content and price. The fruiting body is the visible mushroom above ground, while the mycelium is the thread network the mushroom grows from. In supplements, mycelium is often grown on a substrate of grain (for example oats or rice) – and when mycelium and substrate are dried and milled together, part of the end product can in practice consist of grain residue rather than pure mushroom. This is usually called grain filler.

How to recognise a good extract

The quality of Lion's Mane products varies a lot, and the label says more than the product name. These are the markers that usually separate a well-made extract from a simpler powder:

  • Stated beta-glucan level. A good product states the level of beta-glucans as a percentage – not just the broader item "polysaccharides", which can also count in starch from a grain substrate and therefore overstate the content.
  • Fruiting body over mycelium grown on grain. If you want to avoid grain filler, look for "fruiting body" and avoid products where mycelium and substrate are milled together.
  • Extract ratio. Figures such as "10:1" describe how much raw material has gone into each part of extract. A pure extract differs from milled mushroom powder.
  • Third-party testing and COA. A certificate of analysis (COA) and third-party testing show content and a check for contaminants such as heavy metals. Batch numbers and GMP manufacturing are further signs of traceability.

Extraction method: water, alcohol and dual extract

How the mushroom is extracted determines which compounds carry over to the end product, since different compounds dissolve in different liquids. There are three common methods:

  • Hot water extraction. Extracts water-soluble compounds, above all beta-glucans and other polysaccharides.
  • Alcohol extraction. Extracts fat-soluble compounds, such as hericenones and erinacines, which do not dissolve well in water alone.
