Tongkat Ali dosage: how much should you take?
A common daily dose of standardised tongkat ali extract (200:1) is 200–400 mg per day, usually in the morning. Start low – around 200 mg – for a few weeks and evaluate before you possibly increase. Take it with food if you have a sensitive stomach.
The dosage depends on the extract strength. Below we go through how to convert the dose by ratio, what time of day you should take it, and how to think about cycling. For background on the plant itself, see our complete guide to tongkat ali.
Recommended daily dose by extract strength
The higher the extract ratio, the lower the milligram dose needed. Guideline values:
- 200:1 extract: 200–400 mg per day.
- 100:1 extract: 400–600 mg per day.
- Pure root powder (non-standardised): 1–2 grams per day – considerably weaker per milligram.
If the extract is standardised to a fixed content of eurycomanone (often 1–2 %), the dose becomes more predictable between batches. If you first want to understand how to assess strength and quality, read the buying guide.
How to convert your dose
Multiply the milligrams of extract by the ratio to see the approximate amount of raw herb. Example: 300 mg of a 200:1 extract corresponds to about 60 grams of dried root (300 mg × 200 = 60 000 mg). That is why you should never compare milligrams directly between an extract and a root powder.
Timing – morning or evening?
Most people take tongkat ali in the morning because some experience more energy and restlessness from it. Taken late in the evening, it can disturb sleep in sensitive people. The effect builds up over time – expect a few weeks of regular intake rather than an acute effect the same day.
Cycling and breaks
Many use tongkat ali in cycles, for example 5 days on and 2 days off, or a few weeks followed by a week's break. The aim is to maintain sensitivity. There is no established "right" cycle in the research – listen to your body and stay within the recommended dose.
Common dosing mistakes
- Starting on a high dose straight away instead of building up gradually.
- Comparing milligrams between extract and powder.
- Taking it late in the evening and then blaming sleep problems on something else.
- Expecting an acute effect – it is a supplement that builds up over time.
Safety and maximum dose
Stay within the manufacturer's recommended dose and do not exceed it without reason. If you want to know more about side effects, interactions and who should avoid tongkat ali, read the guide to side effects and safety. See current products in the tongkat ali category.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How much tongkat ali per day?
For a standardised 200:1 extract, 200–400 mg per day is a common range. Start low and evaluate.
What time of day should you take it?
Usually in the morning, since it can provide energy. Sensitive people should avoid late evening doses.
Should you cycle tongkat ali?
Many do (e.g. 5 days on, 2 off) to maintain sensitivity, but there is no clear research support for a specific cycle.
Can you take too much?
Stay within the recommended dose. Higher doses increase the risk of side effects without proven added benefit.
With or without food?
Both work. Take it with food if you have a sensitive stomach.
